Stick figures joined by a string on two ankles
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two matching stick figures in simple black linework sit on the inside of each ankle, one on each side of the photo. A single thin black line runs between them, joining the two figures across the skin. The image is in black and grey on a light skin tone, with a plain, close crop focused on the feet and ankles.

So you do it in your wellies, the cold water over the tops and the reel slipping in your fingers. The gulls on the old lighthouse wall watch without interest. Across the sound, the lights of Dunmore come on one at a time, and somewhere among them is a kitchen where she is probably eating toast standing up, not thinking about you at all.
In March a gale took the line clean off its post. For three days you walked the shore asking fishermen whether they had seen a length of blue twine go past. On the fourth morning you found the far end wound round a lobster pot on your own beach, the knot still tied in the tidy way she was taught. Pinned to it was a card in her handwriting: Next time, tie it yourself.
You kneel on the wet stones and make a new knot, pull it hard until the line hums. Then you give it two sharp tugs and wait, the sea climbing slowly over your ankles. After a long moment, two come back, faint and certain, through the water.
