Sun and crescent moon on forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms are pressed together, each carrying a matching black linework tattoo. The left arm shows a sun with a face and radiating rays, and the right arm shows a crescent moon with a face in profile. The ink is thin and uniform, with no shading or colour, and the pair sits centred in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sun had been stuck in the top of the Ashcombe orchard since midsummer, and the apples beneath him had gone red on his account. Every evening the moon came up over the hedge with dew on her hem, and every evening she stopped at the foot of the third row, because the hedge was thick and the sun was still there, and nobody in the valley could say who had made the rule first.

Tobias Greave picked the windfalls for his aunt and kept his eyes open. He saw the sun unhook one ray at a time, thin as wire, and lay them across the gap like spokes. He saw the moon walk out along them in her bare feet with her hair loose, dimmer at every step. Halfway she turned back to the hedge and pared herself down to a thread, so she could slip through the thorns without catching.

They met under the Bramley tree, where the grass stayed cool. Neither of them said much. The rays went slack in the grass, and the moon sat in the crook of the sun's arm until the light went thin and grey along the hedge. Tobias crouched with his basket and listened to the wasps go quiet, one by one, as if they too were keeping a secret.

By morning the sun was back in his place above the orchard and the moon had gone pale over the east field. Tobias found a curl of silver in the grass where she had sat, and when he lifted his basket there was an apple with two bites out of it, one round and one curved. He did not tell his aunt, and he did not pick that tree again.
