Matching symbol tattoos on three wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three wrists are held together, each with a small, identical symbol tattoo made of looping, looping strokes. The linework is thin and even, in dark brown or maroon ink on skin. The shot is close and centred on the wrists, with the joined hands in the foreground and a grey jacket and purple top at the edges.

The lamp at Skerrow Head had been dark for two nights when the boats came in hard from the west, and it was Mab Tennant who climbed the tower with a can of lamp oil and her two cousins behind her on the iron stairs. Nobody in the village wanted girls sent up there. The keeper had died of his chest in March, the mainland men would not cross the sound until the weather turned, and so the light was theirs to keep burning or let go.

Their grandmother had taught them a knot of looping strokes, one line that folds back on itself three times and never lifts from the page. She said it was the mark of the Tennant women, and that a ship would know a light kept by hands that knew it. Mab drew it on her own wrist with a nib dipped in soot and gum. Ada drew it on hers. Isla, who was nine and afraid of the stairs, drew hers last, pressing so hard the ink bled into the skin.
They kept the wick trimmed through the long night, passing the lamp glass between them and taking turns at the crank when the clockwork slowed. Near dawn the cloud tore open and a fishing smack came round the point with her sail gone grey, and the men aboard saw three raised hands at the gallery rail, each with the same looping mark, held up together against the glass.
The skipper brought his boat in on that beam and never once said which of the sisters had kept the lamp. He only said that the light had not wavered, and that it had looked, from the water, like a knot pulled tight.
