Two people hold hands, each with a matching black and grey tattoo of a skull with a snake coiled around it on the forearm.

Matching skull and snake forearm tattoos

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms show identical tattoos of a skull with a snake wrapped through it, with the tail curling downwards. The linework is bold and the shading is in soft greys, giving the skull and body of the snake some depth. Both arms are held together in a close hand-holding pose on a wooden bench, with the tattoos placed side by side at the centre of the frame.

Dad's branding iron is still on its nail by the back door where you left it. I keep meaning to clean the soot off the face, but when I pick it up the skull looks back at me, grinning through its own rust, and I put it down again.

You asked whether Gran really cut the skull and snake into the ash board in the loft. She did, the summer before she married, with a penknife and a candle stub. The snake goes round the skull twice and its tail curls down like it is listening for something underground. She said the ewes knew that mark better than any of us and would stand still for it. Mrs Pargeter came up the lane on Thursday with her own iron, the same shape, and said her mother had carried it the same way out of Cornwall. Two farms, forty miles apart, and nobody ever told either of them.

So we sat in her kitchen with the two irons on the table between the teapot and the ledger and argued about which one was the original until the tea went cold. Neither of us could say. In the end we agreed it was the snake that counted, not the skull, because the snake was the part that kept coming back round to where it started. I told her you would laugh at that. Come home for the lambing if the roads allow, and bring your gloves, because I have kept yours by the fire.
