Four small wrist tattoos: anchor, infinity, tree, mushroom
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Four people's wrists are clasped together, each showing a small single-line black tattoo. The designs are an anchor, an infinity symbol with a small loop above it, a mushroom-like shape on a stem, and a bare tree. The linework is thin and simple, with no shading, and the plain light tiled floor fills the background.

The rope had been knotted by four pairs of hands before anyone on the slip thought to ask why. Maud Ferris stood at Carrick Quay with the wind pulling at her oilskin and watched her cousins loop the mooring line round their wrists, one after another, the way the old fishermen tied a bowline without looking.

Ada went first, the anchor pricked into her wrist with a sail needle and a spoon of soot. Bridie wanted the figure eight that stood for the tide going out and coming back, and she drew it with a small loop above, like a pulley block. Nell chose the mushroom from the wet woods where they had sheltered in the storm of '31. Sol, who could never sit still, asked for a bare tree, because a tree on the hill was the only thing that never left.
They took the Mary Jane out past the breakwater that March with no man aboard, and the sea swallowed the boathouse but left the boat. Maud heard the rest at the Pilot's Rest later, how the weather came in off the Irish side and the girls held the line between them through the worst of the night, each hand locked on the next wrist.
Nobody could say which of them had let go first, or whether any had. When the boat came round the point on a grey morning, the rope was still knotted at four wrists, and the anchor hung from the bow where it had always hung. Maud pinned the tide tables by the door after that and never again asked them why they tied it.
