Matching heart and infinity wrist tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists are pressed together with matching tattoos of a heart intertwined with an infinity symbol, one on each wrist. The linework is thin, even and dark, with no shading. The background is grass and bare earth, and the skin tone and lighting are natural.

Up on the eleventh floor of Calder House, where the lift had been broken since the wet spring, two girls lived at opposite ends of the same walkway. Their mothers did not speak to each other, and the girls had been told so often that it seemed to them a kind of weather. Nobody asked what they thought, so they made their own arrangements. Each evening Ruth tied a length of green twine to the railing outside her door and let it run along the concrete to Bea's, where Bea knotted a tin with a stone in it to the far end.

The tin carried notes, and the notes carried the small news of the estate: who had got a pigeon through the bathroom window, which caretaker smelled of peppermint, how the boy on the fourth floor had fallen off his bike and kept on pedalling anyway. Bea's mother found the twine one Sunday and cut it at the railings. The girls were quiet for a week. Then Ruth came out with a biro and drew a heart on the inside of her wrist, and it ran into a figure of eight at its tip, so that the line never had to stop. Bea drew the same shape on her own wrist the next morning, and that evening they met at the gap in the railings and pressed their arms together, the two loops touching.
They were told this was foolish, and that ink would wash away. Ruth said her grandmother had kept a loop of wool for forty years and it had never once unravelled. Bea said nothing, because she had already gone and had the marks made properly at a shop on the high street, where a man with steady hands copied the drawing exactly.
When the lift was finally mended, the girls found they no longer needed the twine. They still walked the stairs, eleven floors down and eleven up, just to see that the two shapes still lay side by side in the light from the stairwell window.
