Matching abstract symbol wrist tattoos
Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are interlocked with the fingers crossed, and each wrist carries a small black tattoo of an abstract symbol resembling a stylised arrow or branching mark. The linework is bold and solid black with no shading, and the two designs are similar but not identical. The warm, slightly soft-focus photo shows the wrists in the foreground against a pale wooden panel wall, with a framed picture partly visible at the top left.

Dear Joan,

The damson came into blossom the same week your card arrived, so I am taking that as a sign from the tree, if not from the Royal Mail. You will remember we promised, the summer we were eleven, that whichever of us left Dorset first would send the other a shoot from the old tree in a tin. I have it here wrapped in wet newspaper. It has rooted in a jam jar on the kitchen sill and it looks like it means business.
Dad would have laughed at the state of the orchard. Half the ladders have gone to woodworm and the wasps have claimed the windfalls. But the mark we cut into the bark by the gate is still there, that little forked thing like an arrow that had second thoughts. Mum always said it looked like a bird's footprint. You said it was a map. I have stopped arguing and started tending it, which is probably what you were after all along.
I keep thinking about the crossed fingers we made on the stile before you went north, the day you swore you would be back by harvest. You were not, but the promise held anyway. The cutting is in the jar now. Come home in September and we will graft it onto the wild stock by the wall, the way Dad showed us, and we will see whose branch takes first.
Love, Liz
