Two small black heart tattoos on chest and shoulder

Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

Two small, solid black heart tattoos sit on different people's skin, one on the top of a shoulder near the collarbone and one on the upper chest to the right. Both hearts are simple filled shapes with clean edges and no visible shading. The photograph has warm, soft lighting, with blonde hair and a dark top visible in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth Abbott kept the tin shears on a nail above the bench at Fenwick's shop, and it was she who cut the two hearts from the same off-cut of sheet tin the Thursday before the regatta. She cut them small, no bigger than a thumbnail, because the sheet was short and her father always said a heart that needed room was a heart that would bend. She filed the edges smooth with her teeth set tight, gave one to Tomasz from the chandlery, and kept the other in an empty matchbox under the till.

Nothing came of it for eleven years. Tomasz went to sea on a coaster out of Hull and came back with a cough and a worse temper, and he walked past the shop each morning without looking in. Ruth married a surveyor who measured the cliffs for the railway, and she had her name painted in gold across the window. The matchbox stayed where it was, its hinge gone soft from thumbing.

The spring the shop was sold, a man in a salt-stained coat came in asking whether anyone still had offcuts of good sheet. He had the other heart in his waistcoat pocket, worn thin as a farthing. Ruth fetched the matchbox from under the till and they laid the two pieces side by side on the counter. The edges met without a gap, because they had been cut from the same sheet, and the sheet had never been anything but short.

"The price of tin has gone up," Ruth said. "It has," Tomasz agreed, and he slid a coin across the wood, and neither of them moved to take the hearts back.
