Matching trinity knot tattoos on forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two arms sit side by side, each carrying a trinity knot design of three interlocking loops with curling spirals. The left tattoo is drawn in black outline only, while the right has a black outline with blue ink used for the inner loops and swirls. The linework is thin and even on a plain, lightly freckled skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mother Hesketh's rope-walk ran the length of the lane behind Calder Mill, and by August the twins were quarrelling over the same skein of hemp. Ada wanted the outline and Bea wanted the colour. Their mother had always said a knot was only three loops and a curl, and that a rope without a curl at its end would fray. Neither girl believed her.

One evening they carried the last skein up to the apple loft above the orchard wall, where windfalls rotted gold in the grass. Bea dipped a finger in the blue dye jar and drew the inner loops across the ceiling beam while Ada traced the black outline in charcoal. They worked until the lamp guttered, each copying the other's curl, and by morning the knot on the beam looked as though one pair of hands had made it.

When their mother climbed the ladder she laughed, then went quiet. She turned both girls' wrists over, comparing the marks they had inked on each other that week. "Two knots," she said, "and neither will hold alone." Then she sent them down to the orchard for pears and would not explain.

They came back with the basket split and their sleeves wet, and the walk had already been spun in the same three-loop pattern. Ada took the black skein and Bea took the blue, and they laid the lengths side by side until the ends met. Years later the loft beam still carried their drawing, black lines bleeding into blue where the damp had got in, and nobody had the heart to paint it over.
