Matching trefoil wrist tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two matching tattoos of a three-petalled trefoil motif sit on a pair of wrists, each drawn in black linework. Thin curling swirls in pink on the left wrist and blue on the right extend from the central shape. The photograph is taken straight on, with the two designs centred on the skin and the background softly out of focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Old Mrs Ferriby kept the ovens of the Tallow Lane bakery lit before the first bird sang, and every morning she pressed a three-petalled knot into the dough of two loaves with the end of a wooden spoon. Her nieces, Hanna and Wenna, were given the brushes. Hanna dipped hers in beetroot water and Wenna dipped hers in the blue of crushed bilberries, and the knots came out of the oven with thin curls spilling off them like steam off a kettle.

Nobody in the lane could say why the loaves were marked so. The girls had been told it was a knot their grandmother tied to keep the flour from going damp. One winter the river came over the lane in a single night, and the bakery stood with water to the sill. Hanna waded out before light and found Wenna already there, shin-deep, passing trays up onto the bench. Neither of them spoke. They worked the ovens until the water reached the door, then climbed onto the counter with the last loaves held against their chests.
When the flood went down, the lane found the bakery standing, its brick walls black with river mud, and two loaves on the windowsill still warm from a firing nobody had lit. One knot was pink, one was blue, and the black line running through both had not smudged at all.
After that the two girls took turns at the spoon. The knot came out of the dough the same every morning, with its two colours curling away from it like hands reaching for one loaf.
