Matching twig tattoos on two forearms

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms are shown close together, each with a matching black botanical design of a slender twig or sprig with small branches and buds. The lines are bold and tapered with solid black fills, and the ink appears crisp against the pale skin. The photograph is a close, slightly angled crop on a dark background, with the two designs mirrored in position.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hazel dropped its last catkins the week you left, so I went out with Dad's pruning knife and took two whips from the same leader on the north side, where the bark stays green longest. I wrapped them in wet newspaper and told the postman they were only seeds, which he didn't believe for a second. I know you think I'm soft about that tree.

I cut them both on the slant, but facing opposite ways, so that when they're set in the pot they lean in toward one another like two people reading the same page. Dad always said a graft only takes if the cambium lines up, and I suppose that's what I was trying to do with a pair of sticks and a bit of sentiment. The first one I potted looked dead by the Sunday. Black tips, no give. I nearly threw it on the bonfire.

Your parcel reached you on the ninth day and you wrote back that yours had put out a bud the size of a pinhead, pale green, as if someone had dotted an i. Mine sulked in the shed until March. Then one morning there were three tiny forks along the lower stem, and the branches had bent outward at the same angle as yours, which I would not have believed possible from two cuttings off one tree.

I've stopped trying to work out which of us was cut first. The hazel is still standing at the bottom of the garden, half its height now, and every spring I walk down with the knife in my coat pocket and check the north side before I check anything else.
