Matching UFO and planet wrist tattoos

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two wrists are raised towards the camera, each with a small tattoo. The left wrist shows a flying saucer with a dome and dots along its base, and the right shows a ringed planet, both surrounded by small star marks. The thin, even black linework and the black and white photograph give the pair a matching, minimal look against a wooden floor.

Sit down, the lot of you, and keep your hands out of the windfalls or the wasps will have them. Dilys, the big one is not yours until I've finished, that's how it went last time. Now. Eighty-one summers back, when the Bramleys in Hollins Orchard hung so low you could pick them from the saddle, a saucer came down over the top field and settled on the wall like a dropped lid.

Two sisters were picking that August, Nell and Marjorie Tiller, and they didn't agree on a single thing except that the wasps were a plague. Nell wanted to go up. Marjorie wanted the crop in before the rain. The saucer had a dome on top and a row of portholes round its belly, and it hummed like a kettle thinking about boiling. Out stepped three small visitors, and their basket had split, so they asked, very politely, if they might borrow one of ours.

Nell gave them the basket and then, because she could never leave a door shut, she took them to the highest tree. They showed her Saturn in a tin bowl of water, the rings sliding about like a loose hat, and they promised to come back for her when she was grown. Marjorie stood at the bottom of the ladder with her arms full of fruit and said nothing at all, which was the worst thing she could have done.

Nell never did go up. The saucer lifted at dusk and took the stars with it, or so Marjorie always said, and she kept the gate open every August after that. Some nights a little light sits on the wall. If you're picking late and see it, don't be frightened. Leave the gate open and take the big one for yourself.
