Sun and moon wrist tattoo with Psalms text
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is raised toward the top of the frame, showing a black ink tattoo on the inner wrist and forearm. The design has a sun with radiating rays above a crescent moon, joined by dotted chains that hang down with small star dots, and the words Psalms and 148:3 sit beside the motifs. The fine linework and stippled dots are shown in a single dark ink against pale skin, set on a patterned fabric background.

Mind the step, it's loose, and it's been loose since my grandmother's day. Sit closer, you lot, and Ada, stop picking at that scab. This is the tale of Silas Pennick, who made rope in Porthaven and would not sing at chapel.

He said the sun and the moon needed no help from a rope-maker's voice. They went about their business whether he hummed or not, so why should he add his croak to the choir? The minister tutted and the congregation studied their boots. Silas went down to the quay each evening and sat on the bollard, cutting a little crescent into the wood with his knife, and he thought that was praise enough.
One autumn the fog came in off the bay thick as wet wool, and three boats were still out past the Shag Rock. The lifeboat men shouted until they were hoarse and heard nothing back. Silas climbed the headland with a lantern in one hand and the psalm in his mouth, singing the one line over and over: praise him, sun and moon, praise him, all you shining stars. His voice cracked on every word, but it carried.
The boats came in by the sound, one after another, steering on that cracked voice. When the fog lifted at dawn the sun rose red over the water, and the last star faded above the harbour wall. Silas came down the hill with no voice left at all. They still say that on foggy nights you can hear him from the bollard, if you listen hard enough.
