Ringed planet and crescent moon on wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a ringed planet sits on the inner wrist, with a crescent moon, a four-point star, a tiny dot and a small cross beside it. The planet is filled with solid black and its ring is drawn in a thin outline, while the other motifs use delicate single lines. The image shows a pale hand in a loose fist against a plain grey background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ice had come off the Grand Union overnight, leaving grey slabs knocking against the Dolly Mae's hull, and when Dad's cough kept him below I took the tiller myself. Nobody at Cowley Lock argued with a nineteen-year-old who had already untangled the mooring lines.

Dad's star chart was pinned above the stove, pencilled on the back of an old toll ticket. A ringed planet, filled in hard with the lead, sat in the middle of it. Beside it he'd drawn a crescent moon, a four-point star, a dot, and a little cross for the bridge at Uxbridge. "Find that ring and the river will find you," he used to say, tapping the glass. I had never once believed him.

The fog rolled in past Denham and swallowed the towpath lamps. I couldn't see the bow, let alone the bank. Then a gap opened above the poplars, and there was the planet, the ring tilted exactly as on the chart. Only it was backwards. He had drawn it from the deck, looking up through the hatch, so every mark was mirrored. I turned the ticket over, held it against the glass, and steered toward the star that sat where the cross should have been.

We slid into the lock at first light with the gates groaning shut behind us. I sat on the cabin roof with a pencil and the back of that ticket, and beside his dot and his cross I drew one small mark of my own, a moon with its horns turned the other way, so whoever read the chart next would know which side of the sky to trust.
