Matching watercolour splash tattoos with script
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two arms are shown side by side, each with a soft watercolour splash in pink, blue and teal overlaid with thin black cursive script. The left arm reads "to infinity..." and the right arm reads "and beyond", with the words running diagonally along the splash. The fine, unshaded linework contrasts with the blended colour washes, and the plain background keeps focus on the two matching pieces.

Sit where the lamp can reach you, because my mother told this one with her hands, and I can't tell it any other way. The Pellow sisters had one tin of watercolours between them, a battered thing with six cakes of colour, and they fought over it every evening in the back room of the chandler's shop on Crane Street. Pink went first, always, because Nell pressed too hard. Blue was Maud's, and she guarded it like a sovereign.

The summer the Marigold went down off the Scar, the harbour master nailed a notice to the chapel door asking for anyone who could paint a boat's name back onto a hull. Nobody came forward except Nell, who was eleven and could not reach the bow. Maud climbed the ladder for her. They painted the gilt letters in the rain, and when the letters ran, Nell dipped her brush in the tin and washed the sea itself across the planks, pink where the sunset would have been, teal where the deep water started.
Maud left for the Cape the spring she turned nineteen, on a cargo steamer with a canvas bag and a pocket full of the blue cake, wrapped in brown paper. Nell stood on the quay and called after her, Come back when it's done. Maud shouted back the only thing they had ever said to each other over the tin, To infinity, and the wind took the rest.
Years later a letter came from a port neither of them had heard of. It held a single sheet, a wash of colour gone pale, and two lines in pencil, one above the other. The first was the thing Maud had shouted. The second said and beyond. Nell still keeps it in the tin. The pink cake is down to a sliver now, and the blue is nearly gone, but when you hold the sheet to the window you can still see where the sea was.
