Two forearms, one above the other, each with a fine line black script tattoo reading "We got this" followed by a small heart, on the inner forearm.

Matching "We got this" script on forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms are shown one above the other, each carrying the same handwritten script reading "We got this" with a small open heart after the final word. The linework is fine and even in black ink, with slight softness in the strokes. The skin tones are warm and the background is dark, so the ink stands out clearly.

Ada had the rope in both fists when the swell lifted the coble over the breakwater, and Frank, somewhere behind her in the spray, was shouting at her to let go, the boat was gone, let go. She didn't let go. Their father had taught them both to haul before they could read, and hauling was the only thing she trusted her hands to do.

The lamp at Scarrow Head had failed at dusk and nobody had thought to climb up and see to it. Four men were out past the shoal: the Bell brothers, young Eddie Marr, and old Tom Ferris with his bad hip. Ada and Frank had come down to the slip with a torch, a flask of stewed tea and no sense at all. Frank wrapped the line twice round the iron ring and set his heels in the wet stones. "We got this," he said, the way he always said it, and the way she had always thought was daft.

The boat came in on the next surge, half swamped, Tom gripping the gunwale and the Bells bailing with their caps. Ada's palms were raw through her mittens and she could not feel her fingers. Nobody spoke for a while. Then Tom laughed, a wheezing sound, and said the pair of them looked like two drowned gulls on a fence. Frank said it was the nicest thing anyone had ever said to him.

In the morning Ada sat on the upturned crate by the door and counted the rope burns across her palms while Frank drew the same three words on the back of the shed in tar, the letters leaning into one another like men on a line. He drew a small open heart after them, because the Bells' mother had asked him to, and because the sea had taken enough that week and deserved something back.
