The judges came round every hour with their clipboards and their terrible tea. Somewhere past three, the bandleader stopped playing the numbers and started playing the slow sour ones nobody could dance to, and half the couples gave up and lay down on the sawdust. Maggie looked at Frank, and Frank looked at the ceiling, and she could see he was about to say sorry. So she got in first. He laughed so hard he nearly let go. Then he pulled her in close and they went round that floor like two boats coming off the same wave, slow at first, then faster, until the bandleader lifted his bow and the whole room gave a groan of pure envy.

The next morning they walked to the tattooist on Church Street, sleeves rolled up, and had the words put on the same inch of skin, a little heart after each. Forty years on, Frank still said it was the cheapest thing they ever bought. Maggie never argued. Sit still now, the next song's starting.
