Matching wrist quote tattoos with birds

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two inner wrists are shown side by side, each with a black script quote: Sometimes you fall on the left and before you fly on the right. Two black bird silhouettes sit between the lines on the right wrist, and a small red heart shape with black detail sits beside the left wrist's text. The image is close and evenly lit against a light patterned background, with the ink sharp and clearly legible.

"You'll go in head first if you keep leaning like that," Nell said. Bea didn't look up from the wall. She had a biro pressed to the inside of her left wrist and was writing backwards, checking each letter in the glass of the chandlery window across the quay.

Three weeks earlier she had slipped on the weed-slick ramp below the lifeboat house and gone under up to the shoulders. After that she stopped coming down to the water at all. Nell watched her pack the duffel for the sail-training course in Falmouth, then unpack it, every night for a month, folding the same two jumpers. The morning Bea finally zipped it shut, Nell turned up at the flat with a ballpoint and a sheet of paper torn from the fish merchant's ledger, and a line she had copied from the back of a Christmas card.

They did it at the kitchen table with the radio on. Nell wrote the first half across Bea's wrist, and Bea insisted on doing the second half on Nell's, so each of them ended up carrying the other's words. The ink smudged when Bea laughed, and she laughed at the heart Nell drew without meaning to, lopsided and split down the middle, because the crack looked more like a shell than anything else.

Now the tide is making and the swallows are working low over the boats. Bea slides off the wall, lands on the slipway in her wellies and holds out her arm. Nell holds out hers beside it. Two wrists, two sets of words, and a pair of birds that nobody on the quay would think to look at twice, lifting off the water just ahead of the wind.
