Matching memento wrist tattoos with pink flowers
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two wrists show a matching pair of tattoos. Each has black cursive script with the words Memento Vivere on the left wrist and Memento Mori on the right, with pink flowers and small buds in a cluster beside the text. The pink petals are shaded with soft tonal gradients, while the lettering is clean, solid black line work on a plain skin background.

Grandad Walt kept the light on Scaur Rock for thirty-one years, and when the men from the lighthouse board came to switch it to automatic, he refused to leave the cottage. Mags and I drove down from Leeds that April with the boot full of cardboard boxes, expecting to find him packed. Instead he was out on the gallery at dawn, polishing brass that already shone, the shipping forecast murmuring from a transistor at his feet.

"You'll not get me down those steps by Sunday," he said, without turning round. Mags asked why he'd stay if the light ran itself now. He tapped the glass with his knuckle. "Nobody needs me to keep it lit. That's the trouble. A thing that doesn't need you starts to feel like it's waiting for you to die." He snorted at the two of us standing there in our matching ink from the van in Penzance. "Memento mori, my girl. Your nan had that painted over the kitchen door before your mother was born. Half the village thought it was a curse."
Mags said the other half of it, the bit we'd paid for in pink cherry blossom: memento vivere. Remember to live. Grandad sniffed as if she'd brought in the wrong fish. Then he climbed down, carried the boxes up the stairs himself, and went to bed for the first time in weeks with the lamp still turning in the window.
I stayed up with the forecast crackling and watched the beam sweep the water, dark then bright, dark then bright, until Mags came and sat beside me on the step. Neither of us said the obvious thing. We just counted the flashes the way he taught us, one, two, three, and waited for the next one to come round.
