Hello Kitty in a floral kimono on thigh

Japanese · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A cartoon Hello Kitty character stands in a pink kimono patterned with yellow chrysanthemums and green stars, with a large pink flower in her hair. The linework is bold and outlined, with smooth shading on the face and kimono folds. Vivid pink, yellow and green ink dominate against the skin, and the figure is centred on the thigh.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Hanae had been pinning the same bolt of silk to the drying frame since before the rain, and the white cat who lived under the eaves had watched every pin go in. Nobody in the lane could say whether she was a cat who had learned to stand upright or a girl born with a cat's face who had long since stopped minding the difference. She had no mouth, so she never argued about it.

The cat's own kimono was the only piece in the works nobody had been paid for. Mrs Hanae dipped the yellow chrysanthemums herself, tying each bloom with waxed thread so the pink could not bleed into the petals, while the cat watched her hands with round black eyes and a pale yellow nose-bell, the way a child watches a sweet being wrapped.

On the last night of the autumn fair, the magistrate's son came down the lane with a lantern and a complaint about the cloth. It had run in the rain, he said. The green stars had gone the colour of pond weed. Mrs Hanae did not look up from the vat. The cat stepped down from the eaves, crossed the wet cobbles in her wooden clogs, and lifted the silk from the frame with both paws.

She held it up to the lantern. The stars had bled into the pink exactly where the rain had struck, and the chrysanthemums sat clean above them, every petal still sharp. The boy looked, then looked again, and went home without another word.
