Matryoshka doll and roses on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A matryoshka nesting doll with a dark-haired face, rosy cheeks and a yellow headscarf sits at the top of the forearm, with its painted body filled with large red roses, green leaves and blue detailing below. The design uses bold black outlines and flat, solid colour fills. The tattoo fills most of the frame, with a red and white striped fabric visible in the background.

The flour was still warm when Oksana lifted the last loaf from the stone, and the painted doll on the top shelf had turned its face to the back door, the way it always did before someone came knocking who had no business at that hour. She wiped her hands on her apron and did not hurry. Bakers in the valley learned early that dawn belonged to the bread and not to the impatient.

The doll was the largest of seven, each one hollow and fitting inside the next, their shells covered in red roses that her grandmother had painted with a brush made from a cat's whisker. Every morning for forty years the old woman had opened the biggest one and found a smaller baker waiting inside, and every morning the smaller one had told her which loaves would sell and which would sour. Since the winter the grandmother had gone into the ground, only five dolls remained on the shelf, and the sixth had not come back.
The knock was soft. The man outside had a striped sack over one shoulder and a voice like a closed door, and he asked for rose bread without saying the price. Oksana gave him a loaf still steaming in its cloth. He set a small wooden doll down on the flour sacks, the sixth, painted blue at the skirt, and said the river had given it back to him at Lower Ford. Then he was gone before she could ask how he had known the ovens would be lit.
She lifted the sixth doll and fitted it inside the fifth, then set the whole nest back on the shelf where the lamplight could catch the roses. Outside the sky was going the colour of ash and milk. She dusted off the flour and began the day's first batch, and the doll's painted eyes stayed on the door.
