Cat character with rose on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cat character with a skull-like nose and eyes sits atop a large pink rose, wearing a gold crown and a red bow with a teal lace-style collar. The linework is bold and dark, with soft shading in the rose petals and a blue-grey wash behind the figure. Green leaves and a curling vine extend from the base of the rose, and the design fills the forearm against a yellow top and checked fabric.

Mabel Rourke had sewn the bow onto her collar that morning, and it was still crooked when the band struck up at the Lido Ballroom. Nobody in Morecambe danced like Mabel on a Saturday. She took the floor with her chin up and her black-rimmed eyes half closed, as if the whole hall were a dream she had been asked to keep from waking.

The crown was the trouble. Dessie Crane, who ran the cloakroom and the raffle, had found it under the stage in March, a gilt thing gone soft at the points, and had pressed it on her as a joke. She wore it every week after that. The other girls pretended not to look when she came in, though the bandleader always nodded to her, the way you would nod to a duchess who had lost her carriage.
On the last Saturday of the summer season a sailor from the Barrow boat asked her to waltz, and she said yes before she had decided to. They went round the hall past the rose-patterned urns and the teal lace curtains, and his hand was warm through her gloves. Halfway round, the crown slipped. He caught it without breaking step and set it back on her head as if it had always been his to mind.
When the lights came up she found a single pink rose tucked under her left arm, its stem wrapped in wet newspaper. Dessie swore the sailor had left it, but Dessie swore to everything. Mabel put the rose in her lap on the bus home and did not once look out of the window, because she knew exactly what she would see: the sea, going on without her, pretending it had never been asked to dance.
