Mechanical eye and wing on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The left photo shows a forearm tattoo of a feathered wing above a mechanical eye surrounded by gears, with feather shapes below. The right photo shows the same forearm with black linework of the wing and purple lines tracing the eye and gears on the skin. Soft shading and washed colour in orange, teal and red appear on the left, while the right is mostly line work.

Dear Tomasz,

The brass eye came back to the bench on Tuesday, wrapped in the same oilcloth you used to lend me for the tools. Mr Halloran's grandson carried it in under his coat, saying his grandfather wanted the wheels seen to before the harvest supper. It is a fine old piece, all escapements and tiny spokes set round a lens the colour of weak tea, and someone has painted feathers beneath it in a hurry. I told the boy the feathers were beyond me, and he laughed as if I had made a joke.
I spent three evenings on it with the lamp pulled low. The mainspring had gone soft, and a pinion was cracked clean through, so I cut a replacement from a dead watch that had belonged to nobody in particular. Every time the balance wheel caught I felt the old pleasure, the one you always mocked me for, that a thing made to tell time could also be made to see. On the third night the eye turned a fraction towards the window, and I swear the lens took the lamplight like a pupil.
Mr Halloran came for it himself on Saturday. He turned it over twice, then held it to his ear, and said his wife had always wanted the feathers to look as if they might lift off the metal. I did not tell him the feathers were not mine. He paid me in coins warm from his pocket and walked out with the eye ticking softly against his chest.
I have kept the oilcloth. Come home before the spring and bring the pliers you borrowed in 1998, and we will sit by the stove and argue about whose hand is steadier.
