Meditating figure with lotus and quote
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A single-line drawing of a seated figure in lotus position, with a small flower at the chest and a curling mark above the head. Below the figure, four lines of handwritten script read Whatever comes, let it come. Whatever stays, let it stay. Whatever goes, let it go. The linework is thin and uniform in black on a white background, with no shading.

Mary Farrow had not spoken to her husband since the frost took the pears, and Tom was not a man who could bear a quiet he had made himself. So on the third morning he went down to the water garden with a spade, meaning to clear the pond and be done with the whole business.

The pond was older than the wall around it. Nobody in Hollin End knew who had dug it, only that a lotus had come up in the middle one summer and had come up every year since, whether anyone watered it or not. Tom knelt at the edge with the spade across his knees. A dragonfly had landed on the stalk, and as he watched he found himself trying to hold it still in his mind so that it would not fly off. The bud below it split. Its petals opened, pale as a fingernail, and the dragonfly lifted and was gone over the wall.
He sat there a long time. The spade slid off his knees into the grass. When Mary came down with the kettle she found him with his legs folded under him and his hands loose in his lap, looking at the water as if it had told him something.
"Whatever comes, let it come," he said, though he could not have said where he had heard it.
"Your mother said that," Mary said. She sat down beside him, and they watched the lotus close again as the light went off the water.
