Medusa face with snakes on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large portrait of a woman's face, wreathed in coiled snakes, covers the upper arm. The face is rendered with smooth, soft shading and fine detail around the eyes, nose and cheeks, with cracked stone-like texture across the skin. Snakes with scaled, detailed bodies wrap around the face and edges of the composition, in shades of grey and black on lighter skin.

'Not yet,' Tomas said, though he had stopped believing it weeks ago. The block before him was grey limestone from the Brackwater quarries, and he had coaxed a woman's face out of it the way his father had taught him, starting at the brow and working down, trusting the stone to show him where it wanted to split.

The commission came from Lady Ysolde of Harrowmere, who wanted her drowned sister's likeness for the chapel on the cliffs. She sent no sitter, only a lock of dark hair tied with red thread and one instruction: the snakes must look alive. So Tomas carved them coiled through the hair, and the more carefully he worked, the more the stone seemed to crack along his chisel lines. Fine fissures ran from the eyes down to the jaw. He blackened them with lamp soot, told himself it was only shadow, and kept going.
On the tenth night the lady came to the yard herself, veiled, and stood before the face without speaking. Tomas waited for judgment. Instead she lifted the veil, and he saw that her own eyes were the colour of wet slate, cracked at the rims. 'My sister never turned a man to stone,' she said. 'She only refused to look away from what they had done.' Then she laid her palm against the cheek he had shaped and held it there until the stone grew warm under her skin.
In the morning the chapel doors stood open and the statue was gone. Tomas found only a pale handprint on the limestone floor, and beside it a single scale, grey as dust, that broke when he tried to lift it.
