The mirror on the petrol station wall has been cracked since before you arrived, and the attendant says nobody has ever wanted it fixed. You buy a bottle of water and a packet of salt and ask how far to the next town. He points at the road without looking up, as if the road is answer enough: forty miles of white dust, a line of telegraph poles walking off into the shimmer, and nothing that could be called a bend.

Drive with the windows down. The heat hums off the bonnet and the radio gives you only static shaped like a voice. Somewhere past the third dry wash the poles stop, and a figure stands in the middle of the lane, not waving, just waiting. Her hair is a knot of serpents, each one lifting its head to taste the air, and you know you should look at the road. You look anyway. The wheel goes loose in your hands.
