Mr Hollis wanted the shell finished by Friday, and I had been picking at it since Monday with a graver no wider than a hair, trying to coax a face out of the banded onyx. The stone was black at the rim and milky tan beneath, so the lady would have to be carved in the light layer, her profile standing proud of the dark like a moon over a chimney.

The commission had come by post from a widow in Edgbaston, with a sketch drawn on the back of a dressmaker's bill and one instruction underlined twice: she is to wear her mother's pearls, and no one is to know whose face it is. I asked Mr Hollis who the widow was. He said the widow was paying for the gold, and that a carver who asks questions goes back to Birmingham with his tools in a paper bag.

So I carved her hair in soft rolls and gave her a rose at the throat, and when the last pearl was a dot of white I fitted the shell into its gilt oval and polished it until my own reflection swam in the stone. The bow I left to the goldsmith, who set a small diamond in its knot and sent the brooch back wrapped in tissue. The next week the widow came in person. She held the brooch up to the window, turned it slowly, and said nothing at all. Then she pinned it to her collar, and I saw, reflected in the dark rim, that the face in the shell had my own mother's chin.
