Black and grey neo-trad tattoo of a woman with an updo in an ornate oval frame, with a large rose above her, on the outer thigh.

Woman in ornate frame with rose on thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with an updo rests her chin on one hand, set inside an ornate oval frame with scrolled corners and beaded detailing at the base. A large rose with layered petals sits above the frame, and small leaves extend from either side. The work uses black and grey shading with soft gradients on the face and hair and bold outlines throughout.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ellery Marsh had sat for her miniature three times before the frame was finished, and each time she came in wearing pearls she had not worn the session before. Ada Lusk noticed because she kept the ledger for her father's workshop on Cheapside, and because the pearls were the only thing about the sitter that ever changed. The face stayed the same. The hand under the chin stayed the same. Only the pearls moved, from throat to wrist to a loose string she twisted in her lap while she waited.

"She wants the rose larger," Ada's father said on the Thursday, rubbing gum arabic into his palette. "Larger than the face. Tell her a rose needs room to open."

So Ada drew it that way, layers of petals stacked above the oval like a second head of hair, and she painted the scrolled frame so heavy at its base that it looked built to hold a door shut. When Mrs Marsh came for the last sitting she studied the sheet a long time without speaking. Then she asked Ada to turn the board ninety degrees, so the rose faced the window.

"It was always going to open towards the light," she said. "I only needed someone to draw the hinge."

Ada laughed, assuming a joke, and then saw the woman was not smiling. Mrs Marsh paid in full, left the loose pearls on the bench, and walked out into the rain without an umbrella. A fortnight later a parcel arrived at the workshop from a solicitor in Bath, containing a single pearl wrapped in tissue and a note in careful copperplate: keep the rose, it is yours now.
