Art Deco woman profile on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A woman in side profile wears a pearl-trimmed headpiece with curled hair showing at the temples, set within a fan-shaped Art Deco frame with chevron and drop-bead details below. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with smooth shading on the skin, headpiece and background panels. The palette is mainly olive green, gold and black, with a touch of red on the cheek, and the design is centred on the forearm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Hollis had sold the same green cloche for nine years and had never once been asked about the pearls. Today the rain came sideways off the Dock Road and drummed on the awning over her stall, and the girl from the milliner's across the way kept leaning out to check her hair.

Ada Thorne had brought a headpiece to sell on commission. It was gold silk stiffened with card, ringed with seed pearls in two looping rows, and the price ticket pinned to it was too low by half. Mrs Hollis turned it over under the lamp and said nothing for so long that Ada began counting the drips falling from the canvas.

"Who's it for?" Mrs Hollis said at last.

"Nobody yet. I made it for the Palais sign." Ada nodded across the road, where the dance hall's fan of green glass rays stood dark above the doors. "The manager wants a girl to pose under it, a face in profile, like a coin. He said he'd pay a pound if the pearls were real. They're not. I'd rather he didn't know."

Mrs Hollis laughed, a short rusty sound, and counted out two shillings more than the ticket said. Ada took the coins and didn't bother to say thank you. The rain eased to a fine mist and then stopped altogether, and across the road the sign flickered, caught, and flooded the wet pavement with green and gold. Ada stood with her hands in her pockets and watched the light run along the pearls she had sewn on by candle, and for a moment the glow made every stitch look like it had been meant.
