Mehndi-style floral design on the back of a hand
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests on grey fur with a dark, intricate design across the back and up the fingers, made of swirling florals, leaf-like scrolls and a diamond-shaped central motif. The linework is fine and symmetrical, with small dots and filled areas giving it depth, and the design appears in a single dark brown or black tone. A makeup brush and a compact mirror sit to the left, and the close overhead composition keeps the design as the clear focus.

Dearest Nasreen, the paste has dried now and I can finally tell you what I could not say over the rice. Your mother sat on the low stool with the cone in her fist, the way my own mother held it, and she drew the diamond first, because the diamond is the door. Everything else grows out of it: the scrolls curling up toward the wrist, the little leaves that look like they are turning to face the light, the paisley swelling at the knuckle as if it has been pressed there by a thumb.

You were asleep on the sofa with your shoes still on. Your aunt Farida kept coming in from the kitchen to look at the work and saying nothing, which for Farida is a speech. She had brought the compact from her handbag, the round one with the cracked mirror, and every so often she held it up so the bride could see the pattern from the side and check that the fingers matched. The fingers were the hardest. Your mother kept saying they were too busy, that a hand should breathe, and then she went back in with the thinnest tip and added another swirl.
The colour will go the way they all go, from orange to rust to something nearly brown, and then the edges will soften while the middle holds. The dots will be the last to leave. I have never understood why, only that they always are. Your grandfather used to tap the back of my hand over the dinner table and say the dots were the part that belonged to the family, and the rest was just for the day.
Wash it gently in the morning. Do not scrub, and do not let the cold tap run over it for a while. Ring me when you wake, and tell me which swirl you can still see.
