Colourful neo-traditional style tattoo design of a blue unicorn playing a red guitar with skeletal hands, with a green METAL banner, on a black background.

Metal unicorn guitarist with banner

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

The design shows a blue unicorn with a yellow mane and golden horn playing a red flying V guitar. Its body is a dark hooded skeletal figure in blue and grey, with bony hands on the fretboard, and a green banner below reads METAL. Bold dark outlines, flat colour fills and red splatter marks around the figure give it a bright, cartoonish look against a black background.

Gwen Haskins had been promised one song. The contract said so in black type, underneath a paragraph about gratuities, and her cousin had signed it on the bonnet of a hatchback in a field outside Ledbury. The first dance was due at half past seven. At twenty past nine, the unicorn at the front of the marquee tore the sleeve off the best man's suit with one downstroke, and the hooded skeleton behind him leaned into the microphone and began to sing about the end of the world.

Gwen crossed the dance floor with her clipboard and her reading glasses swinging on a chain. Fairy lights bounced above the hay bales. The guitarist's bony fingers slid up the neck of a red flying V, and the sound rattled the tent poles and set the trifle trembling in its bowl. The golden mane had come loose from one ear and flicked with every chord. "We're not paid until midnight," the unicorn said, not unkindly, "so we're paid in volume."

Her grandmother Edna, eighty-one and wearing a lilac hat the size of a satellite dish, marched up to the stage with her walking stick raised. Gwen braced herself. Instead Edna pointed the stick at the green banner pinned above the bar, its letters curling in the draught, and announced that her Stanley had worn a jacket just like that to the Locarno in 1961. Then she asked for the slow one.

The skeleton played a ballad so heavy the wine glasses hummed. Couples swayed in the sawdust. Edna tapped her stick in time, and when the hooded figure bent low over the fretboard with its eyes shut, she reached up and straightened its hood like a churchwarden. At midnight, when the bride's father came looking for an invoice, he found Gwen on a hay bale with her shoes in her lap, watching the band and laughing into her hands.
