Metallic arrow and dreamcatcher temporary tattoos
Fine line · Chest · Colour · Photo
Two photographs show a woman on a beach wearing metallic gold and silver temporary tattoos. The designs include arrows across the collarbone, a dreamcatcher on the shoulder, a dreamcatcher with diamond and bar motifs down the upper back, and arrows on the back of the hand. The fine, outlined linework is set against warm skin and sand, with the metallic ink catching the light.

The arrows were the first thing the children asked about, because the arrows were the first thing they had seen when the tide went out and left the golden thread glittering on the sand. Old Mere had been sweeping the shell line for thirty summers and knew every colour the sea could leave behind, but not this. She knelt, pressed one finger to a bright curl of metal, and it came away on her skin as if the ocean had decided to write a dream on her.

That was the summer the traders from the far island came with their boxes of light. They sold nothing you could drink or eat. They sold little sheets of shining ink that were pressed onto the shoulder or the nape or the back of the hand, and when the sun struck them they turned to fire. Mere's niece Ansa bought a dreamcatcher for her shoulder, a wheel of fine rings with two feathers trailing from it, and wore it to the dance at the new moon. The young men lined up to ask her what it caught. She told them it caught anyone who lied about the weather.
When the traders sailed, the ink wore thin with salt and sun, but the story did not. Mere took the children down to the shell line each evening and showed them how the arrows pointed toward the place where the sea first gave up its gold. Ansa kept her dreamcatcher until it faded to nothing but a faint shine, and then she laughed and said that was the only honest way a thing should leave, quietly, with the light still on it.
