Metallic dot bands on upper arm

Dotwork · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

Three parallel bands of small round dots run across the upper arm, in alternating silver and gold metallic tones. The dots are evenly spaced and vary slightly in size, with the bands tapering as they wrap around the arm. A hand rests in the foreground wearing several rings, and the soft, plain background keeps the focus on the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every August the old orchard at Hollin Bottom gave up its windfalls, and Mab Tarrant walked the rows at first light with a basket on each arm, counting. Her grandmother had counted there before her. The tally went into a tin box under the stairs: silver for the fruit the wasps had not touched, gold for the fruit that had ripened high where only the wind could reach.

One year the count came up short. Three rows of Ribston trees had been stripped in a single night, and the box held barely enough for the cider press. Mab sat on the stile at dusk and waited, and when the mist rose from the brook a tall figure came up between the trunks, its coat hung with bands of small bright dots, silver and gold, that clicked softly as it moved. It was the Orchard Mother. Everyone in Hollin Bottom knew the tale, though nobody had seen her.

"You've been taking my apples," Mab said, because her grandmother had taught her to be plain with the old things.

"I have been taking what you owe me," said the Mother. "Every fruit off this ground is paid for in dots, one for each seed in the core. You have been paying in coin."

Mab walked home and emptied the tin box onto the kitchen table. Next morning the box was full of dots, warm as sunlight, and on the gatepost three bands of them lay shining in the dew.
