Gold chevron tattoo on the back of a hand

Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo

A hand is raised against a plain pale background, with a pair of thin gold chevron lines on the back, near the base of the index and middle fingers. The linework is fine and even, and the gold tone is the only ink colour in the frame. Several bracelets in gold and silver sit on the forearm, and the composition is tightly cropped to the hand and wrist.

I was the one doing the rounds at night, counting the bulbs the council kept promising to replace. Mrs Okafor on fourteen wanted to know if he was lost. I told her he was guiding people home, which was closer to the truth than she'd expect. Her husband had gone down those stairs at two in the morning for a cigarette and never come back up, and she was tired of the dark standing between her and the front door.

The arrows didn't lead anywhere in particular. They just kept going, past the roof hatch and out into the cold where the aerial blinked red over the estate. On the last night Marlon handed me the tin and showed me the back of his own hand, where he'd dabbed one small gold chevron like a stamp. "So you can find the way down," he said. I didn't laugh. The next morning the lift was working again, and nobody could say who had fixed it.
