Arrow designs on two hands and wrists
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are shown side by side, each with a matching arrow design running across the back of the hand from the wrist toward the fingers, with a dark band pattern on the lower wrist of one arm. The arrow lines are crisp and geometric, with some areas appearing silver and others black, and the designs look temporary or metallic rather than inked. The photograph is taken from above on a neutral stone background, with silver rings, a wide bracelet and white nail polish adding contrast.

Nell had counted the lift stops since the fire alarm went at six, and by the fourteenth floor she had decided the arrow in her coat pocket was the only thing in Halden House worth carrying down. Her grandfather had cut the fletching from goose feathers the summer before he stopped being able to climb the stairs, and he had left it for her with a note in pencil: Keep it straight and it will find the right window.

The block was quiet in the way buildings go quiet when everyone is standing in the car park in their slippers. Nell pressed past the bins on the ground floor and out onto the wet concrete, where the neighbours were gathered in clumps under the orange lamps. Nobody was looking up. She was looking up. On the top floor, behind glass painted over with a fading crescent moon, a light was still on.
She went back in against the advice of a man with a clipboard, took the stairs two at a time, and counted again. Fourteen, fifteen, sixteen. The door to flat 16C stood open an inch. Inside, an old woman sat by the window turning the silver rings on her fingers like the pages of a book she could no longer read.
"You left the gas on," Nell said, though she could smell nothing.
"I left the arrow on," said the woman, and smiled, and nodded at the sill, where a second shaft lay beside a tin of coloured foil. Nell picked it up. Three chevrons had been stamped along its head, pointing back toward the handle, and she understood at last which way the thing had been meant to fly.
