Gold feather on wrist with bangles

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A gold feather design sits on the inner wrist, its quill running diagonally and its barbs rendered with fine textured lines. Several gold bangles are stacked on the same arm, one with small screw-head details, and they catch the light alongside the feather. The image is warm in tone, with a soft white background and a shallow focus on the wrist.

Hold your umbrellas low, the lot of you, because the rain has been coming sideways off the harbour since Tuesday and I am not shouting over it again. Mrs Okonedo at the fish stall will tell you the goldsmith's boy was a fool, and she is half right, which is the best any of us can hope for. His name was Tobias Renfrew and he worked the bench at the back of Paddock's Arcade, under a lamp that buzzed like a wasp in a jar.

Every morning he beat gold leaf so thin you could read a newspaper through it, and every evening he swept the offcuts into a tin for the melt. One wet afternoon a woman came in with a single magpie feather, grey at the base and black at the tip, and asked him to make her something that would not fly away. He laughed at her. Then he stopped laughing, because she was not, and he took the feather home with him in his coat pocket.

For nine nights he hammered a copy of it out of gold, barb by barb, scoring each vane with a needle so the light would catch in lines like rain on a window. On the tenth night he finished it, and the feather in his palm had grown warm and light, and the lamp had gone out, and the tin of offcuts was empty. The woman never came back for it. What she left on the bench was a slip of paper that said only: wear it where you can see it move. So he did, and if you come down here when the rain turns sideways, you can still find him selling feathers that never quite stay still.
