Metallic geometric temporary tattoos on an upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A close-up of a person's upper arm and side, with a black bikini top at the edge of the frame. Metallic temporary tattoos in gold, silver and blue include a feather, a black feather, several horizontal bands of diamond and zigzag patterns, and a stacked diamond motif. The fine, flat designs sit on smooth skin against a blurred blue sea and sand background.

Dear Nell, I am writing this on the step of Mrs Pell's back porch with my feet in a basin of cold water, as the sun has been so hot all week that the tar on the promenade has gone soft. Mr Vosper has set up his stall by the pier again. He has a little hand press he bought from a printer in Bristol when the shop shut, and he stamps foil onto strips of pale paper, gold and silver and a blue that I swear he mixed himself in the back of the chemist's. You rub a strip with your thumb, peel the backing away, and there is a feather or a band of diamonds sitting on your skin as if it was always meant to be there.

The patterns are his own, or near enough. The feathers he copied from a blanket his brother brought home from Canada, and the zigzag bands are the same ones that run along the rug in the Pells' parlour, only he has stretched them so they wrap twice round the arm. The stacked diamonds he says are for luck, though I told him luck does not come off in the bath. He charges threepence a strip and has sold more this month than the ice cream man, and the garage boys keep asking for the black feather, which keeps smudging.
Yesterday he gave me a silver band free of charge, with the diamonds, and told me it would last until the first sea. I asked whether that was a shame and he laughed and said nothing here is meant for keeping. I think he is right, which annoys me. So on Saturday I am wearing it to the dance at the Mariners, and when Father sees it he can say what he likes.
Now the strip is drying on my arm and the sun has got into the silver so that it looks like something the tide has left behind. Come down at Whitsun and bring the good scissors. We can cut out the diamonds together and see who can make the longest chain. Your loving sister, Margaret.
