The foil lay on the tailgate of her uncle's van, silver leaf backed with waxed paper, and the wind kept lifting its corners as if it wanted to read the pattern. She pinned it down with four bottle caps and leaned over the stencil with her knife.

The road to Qasr Hamid ran straight for forty miles without a bend, and the only other traffic was a water lorry and a boy on a donkey. Her uncle had taught her that gold sold in the towns and silver sold on the coast, so she carried both: gold dots that caught the sun like spilled coins, silver scallops for the shoulder, and a filigree cuff that a bride had ordered and never collected. Nobody collected anything out here.

At the well stop a woman in a grey headscarf bought the chevron band without haggling. She pressed it onto her forearm with a damp thumb, rubbed hard, and held her wrist up to the light. That evening Mina cut a blank sheet and drew a new scalloped edge from memory, each curl a little smaller than the last. She folded it twice and slid it beneath the seat, where the next road was already waiting.
