Metallic temporary tattoos on forearm and hand
Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A woman in a black bikini wears metallic gold and silver temporary tattoos of a mandala medallion, chevron bands, arrows and small feathers on her forearm, wrist and hand. The designs are simple flat foil outlines with no shading, and a few gold marks also appear on her hip. The warm skin tones and pale background make the metallic designs stand out in a close, cropped composition.

The galley of the Mercy Jane smelled of tallow and scorched crust the night Cook Hebe found the tin behind the flour bin. Inside lay leaf so thin you could read the purser's ledger through it, beaten from coins he had melted down years before and forgotten. Hebe had never been told where it came from, and the ship's boys swore it was older than the keel.

She took the shears to it by lamplight. She cut a round medallion with a star pricked at its centre, then strips of chevrons for the cuffs, then small arrows for men who had lost their way home, and last of all feathers, one for each gull that had ever perched on the rail and let go of a feather in passing. She laid them on a board to dry, and they caught the lamp like fish scales.
Tobin, the youngest deckhand, came down for water and stood staring. He wanted something to carry ashore to the girl in Porthleven who had not written in a year. Hebe warned him the foil would hold only while he kept the sea close to his hands. Salt and sun would give it back in time. He laughed and asked her to press it on anyway.
In the morning the medallion shone on his wrist, the chevrons ran up toward his elbow, and the arrows pointed the way the ship was sailing. Hebe scraped the tin clean for the next crew. On the horizon the gulls turned together, and one of them was missing a feather.
