Metallic hamsa hand and chain temporary tattoo sheet
Geometric · Colour · Flash
The sheet shows two hamsa hand designs in metallic gold and silver outline, one larger at the top and one smaller below, each with a central eye and ornamental paisley and dot detailing. Vertical strips of linked chain with quatrefoil and dot charms run down both sides, and two thin ornamental bars sit between the hands. Turquoise fills the charms and some dots against the gold and silver, on a plain white background.

The transfers had sat on Ferhat's counter since the spring rains, two gold hands and a fringe of blue-dotted chain pressed onto backing paper, and nobody in Qasr Dhil would take them. The widows said they looked like something a shopkeeper's daughter would wear to a wedding in another city. Ferhat said they were lucky. He said it every morning while he dusted them with a feather.

Then a boy came in from the desert road with sunburnt wrists and a question about his father's mule. The mule had wandered past the salt flats three nights before and not come back. The boy wanted the eye, the one set in the middle of the larger hand, because his grandmother had told him an eye watches over what you cannot see. Ferhat peeled the transfer from its paper, laid it on the boy's wrist, pressed it down with a damp cloth, and counted to thirty the way his own mother had taught him.
They walked out together at dusk, the boy ahead with the painted eye catching the lantern light, Ferhat behind with the rest of the sheet rolled under his arm. At the third dry well the scrub moved, and it was not the mule. It was an old woman on a flat rock, mending a bridle with a pair of tin pliers and a loose string of blue beads in her lap. She did not look up.
"Your gold will rub off in a week," she said. "The eye only needs to last until you reach home." The boy laughed and held out his wrist. In the lantern light the turquoise iris seemed to blink back at her, as though it had been waiting for someone to say so, and far off along the road the mule began to bray.
