Gwen had been filing the same link for an hour when the shift whistle sounded up at Nantglas, and she let the file drop onto the bench. Her father would be coming down the hill soon, black to the eyebrows, wanting his tea and something to show for the week. She had nothing to show him yet but a tin of tracing paper and a sheet of gold-foil transfers that Dai had won off a Cardiff salesman at cards.

She laid them out under the parlour lamp: the leaf sprig, the quatrefoil chain, the diamond lattice like the tiles on the chapel step at Ebenezer. She copied them onto the lids of the biscuit tins her mother kept her buttons in, cutting around each shape with her mother's nail scissors. The foil rubbed off on her thumbs and filled the room with the smell of hot metal. Her mother said it was a waste of good light. Gwen kept going.

By the time the whistle blew again, she had dressed six tins in gold, each one a little different from the last. The wings were the hardest. She had cut them twice, and the second pair came away clean, curling at the tips like something alive. She set the tins on the dresser in a row, where the lamp caught them.

When the back door opened, her father stood with his cap in his hand and coal dust in every crease of his face. He looked at the dresser for a long moment, then at her. "Nothing down there shines," he said. Gwen only nodded and turned the lamp up so the wings flared bright enough for him to see.
