The tide was already turning when Mabel Quick pegged the last guy rope into the shingle, and the big top sagged behind her like a wet sail. Nobody had come to the Pennick Brothers' Travelling Marvel since Easter. The posters had faded to the colour of weak tea, and the elephant, Duchess, had been sold to a farm near Bodmin in March. What remained was a trapeze rigged over a strip of sand, a clown who played the accordion badly, and a high wire strung between two rocks that only the tide could bother to check.

Mabel's act was the high wire, though it had not been high for years. Her father had walked it across the harbour mouth when the circus was still a real thing, and he had taught her to read the swell the way other people read a newspaper. A wave, he always said, is just the sea making a point and then thinking better of it. She counted them now as she stretched her arms out over the water: three long ones, a short one, then the lull she needed.
The crowd was four children, a dog, and Mr Haddow from the chandler's, who came every night with a flask and a sour face. She walked the wire for them anyway. On the fourth step the wire hummed and she felt the lull arrive, cool and certain, and she did not look down.
When she reached the rock she found Mr Haddow standing at the foot of it with the flask held out, not drinking, just offering. "Your father would have liked that," he said gruffly. Mabel took the flask, tasted it, and grinned. Tomorrow they would pack the tent, but tonight the sea had made its point and she had answered it.
