Metallic temporary tattoos on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with long, wavy, highlighted hair is photographed from behind, with her bare back and shoulders visible and a white crochet top worn off the shoulders. On her upper arm sits a fine metallic scale pattern above a thin ornamental band with a chain-like motif, rendered in silver and white ink. The photo is taken outdoors in bright sunlight, with a tree, a wooden railing and a coloured building in the background.

Rain had been coming in sideways off the estuary since five, and Maud Haskins gave up on her fish stall at half past seven. The mackerel lay on the ice under the tarpaulin, their backs striped like wet slate, and she stood counting them the way her nan had counted rosary beads, one bead for every small grievance.

Across the aisle, Tobias Reeve kept his tinsmith's barrow under a sheet of corrugated iron. He sold spoons, bent keys and the thin ornamental chains that dockers hooked to their watch fobs. All morning he had been beating scraps of silver against the skins of fish she could not sell, lifting out the prints like a baker testing bread.
"Scales keep their shine longer than people do," he said, holding one up to the grey light. He offered her a length of chain in exchange for a bucket of the mackerel. She thought him soft in the head, but she took the chain anyway and went home with the bucket dripping on her boots.
Three weeks later the rain stopped for the first time since May. Maud sat on her back step with the silver scales stitched along the hem of her mother's shawl, and when the sun broke through, every one of them caught the light at once, like a shoal turning in deep water.
