Gold arrow and triangle design on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A woman with long blonde hair, turned away from the camera, wears a white crochet bralette and several delicate necklaces. A gold-toned arrow and triangle design, which looks like a temporary metallic tattoo, sits on her forearm alongside thin bracelet lines. The image is bright and softly lit, with a pale, sunny background and a shallow focus on the arm.

You are eleven the summer the engine house at Hallow Gill stops pumping, and the men come up the lane with their dinner tins and no work. Your father sits on the wall outside the Miners' Arms and tells anyone who asks that the mine is only resting. You do not believe him. You believe the arrow.

It is painted in gold on the blackened stone above the adit, a single shaft pointing down the valley, and beneath its head sits a small hollow triangle like a tent pitched on the hill. Nobody in the village will say who put it there. Mrs Tregenza says it is a survey mark from her grandfather's day. Your brother says it is treasure, which is what eleven-year-old boys say about everything.

So one evening, when the light goes long and gold across the spoil heaps, you follow the arrow. It leads you past the washing line, through the bracken, over a stile where the stone is worn to a dip by a century of boots. At the triangle you stop. The ground there is dry and hot, and a single rusted bucket sits in the grass with a note wedged under its handle in your grandmother's looping hand: The gold was never the point. Bring your father here.

You walk back down the valley at dusk, and this time you do not run.
