Metallic temporary tattoos on forearm and hand
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A woman wearing a black bikini top has gold and silver metallic temporary tattoos on her forearm, wrist and hand, including a large mandala, a small disc, thin bands and an arrow motif. The fine outlines are shown in flat metallic foil, with no shading, and the designs sit against warm, sunlit skin. The composition is tightly cropped on the arm and chest, with a metallic feather necklace worn above the bikini.

The order came in on the back of a ferry timetable, pencilled in a looping hand: forty sheets of gold and silver, a mandala the size of a coin, feather fronds, thin bands for wrists, and one small arrow pointing nowhere in particular. I had cut brass stamps for the print shop on Pier Street for eleven years and no one had ever asked me for an arrow that pointed nowhere. Dad used to say a design should know where it was going. I decided this one could make up its own mind.

I worked late at the bench with the lamp pulled low, pressing each motif through the foil with a blunt steel point until the metal lifted clean from its backing. The silver took the light differently from the gold, a cooler flash, and the feathers came out best when I left a hair of shadow along their spines. On Thursday Ines Carvalho came to collect, her hands still gritty from the salt flats she had been walking since dawn. She sat on my stool and watched me peel the last sheet. 'The arrow is for the boy who always finds his way home,' she said. 'Even when he shouldn't.'
The wedding was on the shingle below the old lifeboat house, and by the time the sun went down the foil had rubbed away in the sand, leaving only bright ghosts of it on wrists. I wasn't invited, but I stood at the gate with a cup of tea gone cold. Near midnight a girl came up the steps with a single silver feather stuck to her thumb and handed it over. Its edge still held the faint outline of an arrow, and it pointed back down the hill towards my workshop.
I went home and cut another forty sheets before dawn. This time I left the arrow off, and hung the lamp back over the bench, pointing at nothing at all.
