Blue ornamental forearm designs with dotted lines
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A woman with her arms crossed over her midriff shows pale blue and white ornamental designs on both forearms. Each design is a symmetrical column of scrolls, teardrop shapes and fine dotted lines that run from the wrist towards the elbow. The ink is a light blue with white highlights, and the composition is set against a sunny beach backdrop with a metallic chain piece on the torso.

The rain had been coming since six, and by nine the awnings over Carrow Street sagged like wet sails. Nadia Okafor pulled the last bolt of indigo cotton from under her trestle and laid it across her knees. Her grandfather had carved the blocks in a village she had visited only twice. Every paisley on the cloth was a teardrop with a curl at its tail, and the curls all turned the way the sun travels.

Mr Pell from the bric-a-brac stall next door came over with two mugs of tea and watched the water beading on the blue. "Thought you'd packed up," he said. "Rain takes the colour out of anything." She shook her head and showed him the dots she had pricked along the selvedge with a darning needle, rows of fine pale specks where a paste of rice flour had kept the dye away. They looked like stars seen through cloud.
A boy in a yellow cagoule stopped, staring at the cloth as though it might move. His mother hurried him towards the fruit sellers, but he kept twisting back. Nadia folded the bolt in thirds, the way her grandfather had taught her, so that the motifs stacked one above another in a column, and handed the end to the boy to hold while she wrapped the rest in brown paper.
By ten the market was emptying and Pell was sweeping the water off his canopy with a broom. Nadia tucked the parcel under her arm. The boy's wet hand had left a print on the indigo, a small pale star where the dye had lifted. She decided to keep it that way.
