Gold metallic chevron and triangle temporary tattoos
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm with two rows of silver chevron arrows and a gold chevron band with a knotted detail, alongside a row of six small gold triangles on the upper thigh. The designs are flat, metallic foil with crisp, uniform linework and no shading. Gold bangles and a gold wristwatch sit on the arm, and the composition is set against a blurred beach and sea background.

The gold paint ran out in Saltmarrow, so Tamsin mixed the last of the pot with linseed oil and painted the chevrons on the caravan wheels herself. Her father watched from the step with his hat on his knee. Nobody had paid the pitch fee since March, and the two grey horses had gone to a dealer in Doncaster who knew how to count teeth.

The old people in the village said a travelling show that lost its way left arrows behind so the folk who had seen its lights could find their own way home. Ezra Vell had told the story so often that the children mouthed it with him at the fire. Tamsin had never believed a word of it, but she painted the arrows anyway, two rows pointing east, because her hands wanted something to do that was not counting coins.
On the last night, six people came. They sat on the damp benches under the tent and watched a juggler drop a skittle and laugh about it. Afterwards, Tamsin took the six triangular pennants down from the guy ropes, folded them, and nailed the largest to the gatepost at the end of the lane. The gold point faced the sea.
In the morning the caravan was gone, and the tent lay in a heap by the hedge. A boy from the farm came up the lane with his dog and stopped at the post. He read the gold chevrons, looked at the shining triangle, and turned for home the way it told him.
