Brother Anselm has taught you the eight strokes of the character for forever, and you have spent three winters failing the last one. The cold in the scriptorium is the kind that gets into ink, so every stroke dries grey at the edges. Abbot Tomas says the hand must be quick and the breath must be slow, and you have never managed both at once.

Down the valley, the village sells lanterns shaped like the moon, and on the night of the full moon the novices are let out past the gate to buy them with coppers saved from the washing. You walk with Ilse, who has dyed the ends of her hair with crushed blueberries and river clay, and who laughs at your ink-stained fingers. She says the moon is only the sun's lamp seen from the wrong side. You say that is why it never burns out.

Back in the scriptorium before matins, you pick up the brush one last time. The final stroke is a short downward hook, and you have always pressed too hard on it. Tonight you lift the brush early and let the line thin to nothing, and the character sits on the paper as if it had always been there. Brother Anselm looks at it for a long time and says nothing, which from him is praise.

In the morning the abbot pins the sheet above the door, and you see it from the courtyard: one small black mark that means everything lasts, pinned to a wall that will not.
