Cartoon character tattoo on upper back
Back · Mixed · Photo
The photograph shows the back of a person with pastel rainbow hair worn in a loose, twisted updo. A small cartoon character tattoo sits on the upper back, close to the neck and shoulder blade. The tattoo uses grey outlines with soft pink and yellow fills, and the image is a simple, evenly lit studio shot against a pale grey wall.

The baker's boy of Hallowmere had a rule about the road to the mill: nobody walked it after the bells, and nobody took the short way through the reed beds. Mab Oddy was nine and had never once obeyed a rule she could walk around, so on the evening the river rose she took the short way, with a loaf under each arm and her boots full of cold water.

In the reeds she found a creature no taller than the loaves. Its head was round as a full moon, its cheeks the colour of cut plums, and its ears flapped whenever it laughed, which was often. It had lost its name in the flood, it said, and asked her to call it whatever the village called small lost things. Mab thought for a while and called it Pim, and Pim seemed pleased, the way a dog is pleased when it is given a stick it did not expect.
Pim walked her to the mill and showed her the sluice gate that the old miller had shut and forgotten. The water came through the reeds because nobody had thanked the reed-folk for keeping the banks in place, and Pim could not open the gate alone. Mab pulled. Pim pushed with its whole round head. The water went down the channel where it belonged, and the miller woke up complaining about the noise.
The lanterns of Hallowmere are still lit at dusk, though nobody agrees why. The children leave a crust on the mill step each night for a small grey thing with a pink face, and in the morning the crust is always gone.
