Mickey Mouse silhouette filled with flowers and a rose
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A Mickey Mouse head outline is filled with traditional-style flowers, leaves and a large central rose drawn in bold black linework. Fine stippled dots shade the background and edges, giving a textured, shadowed effect. The design is in black ink only and sits centred within the frame against plain skin.

By the third week of snow the mice had eaten the seed barley in every store above Carrow Gap, and old Mared Penn went up the pass with a sack of bread crusts under her arm and a flask of thin ale in her apron. Nobody sent her. She had buried two husbands on the far side and had no use for pity, but the mice had come down into the valley houses and she had heard their chewing through the walls at night.

At the cairn she found a mouse sitting upright on a flat stone, its round ears turned to the wind as if it were listening for a particular bell. She set the crusts down. The mouse did not run. Around it the frost had melted in a ring, and through the lichen small blue gentians were pushing up, then a cluster of daisies, then a dark red rose growing out of a crack no wider than a thumb.
The mouse followed her back down, stopping each time she stopped, and at the last bend it turned and ran back up into the rocks. Mared did not go up again that winter. She told the village what she had seen, and they laughed at her until the seed in their own stores ran out.
In spring the rock by the cairn was ringed with flowers in the shape of a mouse's head, two round ears and a broad round face, with a rose at its heart. The men said it was a trick of the frost. The women cut the shape into their shawls and sewed it there, and to this day no family above Carrow Gap has gone hungry, though nobody can say why the rose is always the last thing to open.
